Everyone has fears; some people are just better at keeping them a secret. However real or imagined, when they are running through your mind and body, they create pain and suffering. Action is the antidote to fear. The quickest way to squash fear before it takes hold is to examine it and do something about it. The process only takes a few minutes and will restore peace of mind.

Common fears include job security, health, and the well-being of your family. Everyone is scared of getting their heart broken. Letting such fearful thoughts run wild only feeds them, but action is like magic in that it transforms the situation into an opportunity to grow and improve your life. The trick is to learn how to work with your fears and let them create awareness in your life. Often things that we fear, but are in our control, simply need some attention.

For example, I used to constantly worry about my career. I was admittedly hot and heavy for the first year or two at a job, and then I would get bored and my performance would start to peter out. Inevitably, I would start worrying about it, until I finally learned that the only thing that made me feel better was to take action and start doing my best. If I was stressed that we hadn’t received enough press, I would start pitching my heart out and before long, I would have a dozen requests for product and press hits to show investors. The stress was gone, and I was happy again.

The process is simple: Specifically identify the root of the fear and determine positive actions you can take immediately. Ask yourself what is really bothering you. When you get an answer, follow up by asking yourself, “And?” Keep digging until you feel you’ve hit the heart of the issue. Then map out one to three things you can do immediately to remedy the situation and do them. Right now. You will feel better within minutes.
